Geographic Information Retrieval

چکیده
Due to the abundance of information, querying the World Wide Web has become increasingly difficult. Geographic properties of Internet resources can be directly used for making Internet search more personalized and for increasing the quality of results. However, little work has been done in this area so far and the general direction of research and development has been uncertain. In this paper, essential questions in this field are addressed: First, we outline a three-stage architecture for an efficient and effective mapping of Internet resources to geographic locations. Geospatial search engines are one important application of this mapping. Such search engines fundamentally differ from their traditional counterparts, particularly in respect to selecting and ranking search results. Finally, we propose geospatial analyses using localized web crawls. Such analyses allow the support of new types of queries as well as the reduction of cost compared to conventional data-collection techniques. The paper concludes with an overview on challenging research questions.

Geographic Information Retrieval: An Overview
Geographic Information Retrieval can be seen as a specialized branch of traditional Information Retrieval. It includes all of the research areas that have traditionally made up the core of research into Information Retrieval, but in addition has an emphasis on spatial and geographic indexing and retrieval. This article present some of the challenges in Geographic Information Retrieval like the ...
متن کاملBerkeley2 at GeoCLEF: Cross-Language Geographic Information Retrieval of German and English Documents
Berkeley group 2 participated in the GeoCLEF pilot track of CLEF 2005 by performing English and German monolingual geographic information retrieval and bilingual geographic information retrieval using English topics to retrieve German documents and vice versa. Our results were substantially above the medians for all categories. We found that major improvements for German retrieval derived from ...
متن کاملGeographic Information Retrieval and the World Wide Web: A Match Made in Electronic Space
This article looks at the access to geographic information through a review of information science theory and its application to the WWW. The two most common retrieval systems are information and data retrieval. A retrieval system has seven elements: retrieval models, indexing, match and retrieval, relevance, order, query languages and query specification. The goal of information retrieval is t...
متن کاملEvaluating Geographic Information Retrieval
The processing steps required for geographic information retrieval include many steps that are common to all forms of information retrieval, e.g. stopword filtering, stemming, vocabulary enrichment, understanding Booleans, and fluff removal. Only a few steps, in particular the detection of geographic entities and the assignment of bounding boxes to these, are specific to geographic IR. The pape...
متن کاملLocation Identification for Geographic Information Retrieval
In this paper we identify location names that appear in queries written in Indonesian using geographic gazeeter. We built the gazeeter by collecting geographic information from a number of geographic resources. We translated an Indonesian query set into English using a machine translation technique. We also made an attempt to improve the retrieval effectiveness using a query expansion technique...
متن کاملLearning Ranking Functions for Geographic Information Retrieval Using Genetic Programming
Geographic Information Retrieval (GIR) has emerged as a new and promising tool for representation, storage, organisation of and access to geographic information. One of the current issues in GIR research is ranking of retrieved documents by both textual and geographic similarity measures. This paper describes an approach that learns GIR ranking functions using Genetic Programming (GP) methods b...
